My Letter from America Brings US Icon Museum to Global Orthodox Audience

On September 24, 2025, I published my first Letter from America for the Friends of Mount Athos newsletter and website. FoMA is a unique UK-based charity with a global reach, which supports the historic Athonite monasteries of Greece.

Devoted to the Icon Museum and Study Center in Clinton, Massachusetts, my article was developed from on-site interviews with the museum’s director and research director, and my inspections of some highlights of the vast collection. It is particularly strong on Russian icons, with some Byzantine, Venetian Cretan, post-Byzantine and rarities like a few Ethiopian icons and some items from Mount Athos itself.

Aside from the observations of museum staff on their work, the article is also useful for trip-planning as it provides logistical information and details on 2026 gallery showings and conferences to be held at the museum. The article revealed a hidden gem for both the Orthodox faithful and general travelers passing through this placid corner of New England.
